Open Question: How can I do some aid work?

My school are going to Uganda and to be honest I really want to go. Thing is though I hate flying, totally scared of it. I don't think I could stand to be on a plane for that long. Does anyone know where I could volunteer next summer for some aid work and how to get about raising the money I need? I want to do something where I don't have to fly (however I could just get the train through Europe/ hire a car or something), something which will look good when I apply for London School of Economics in a couple of years ;) Thanks for any help!
